1928 Star Truck Depot Hack Station Wagon

1928 Star Depot Hack/Station Wagon

The Star Motor Company was founded by William C. Durant, who was the founder of General Motors Corporation. Durant began his career with a horse-drawn carriage company in 1886 and took over Buick in 1904, forming the General Motors (GM) Company in 1908. He lost control in 1910 to Chevrolet but regained ownership in 1915. He was forced out for good in 1920 and founded his own company, Durant Motors, Inc., in 1921. He had no car, but he had the faith of investors and good will of dealers. Before production began in 1921 of the Durant Four, he had 30,000 dealer orders. The next year, he brought out a low-priced car, the Star, to compete with Ford and Chevrolet. When the crash came in '29, Durant was hit hard and the Star ceased production that year.

I found this truck at an Auction in Dallas in November of 2006. This truck doesn’t fit into my definition of delivery trucks that I’m collecting. It was sitting on display in the Auction Area the first day and drew my attention because of its age and a rare truck name. I knew of the Star Auto Company from some articles I read but I never saw one in person. I would have forgotten about the truck if the Auction bidding would have gone differently. The truck drew an opening bid and that was it. It was to be sold at a NO RESERVE basis. Since there was no other bidding taking place, I placed a bid on the truck and there were no counter bids and I bought the truck.

The truck has a new wood body on it, the engine runs, the wiring has to be replaced, the engine compartment needs a little work, the metal needs some TLC and the truck is ready to drive around and take to Shows. My goal is to take it to one or two Truck Shows a year along with some of my other trucks.
