1981 Delorean Two Door Sports Car John Delorean worked for Ford Motor Company for years and decided that he wanted to build a Sports Car of his own. He built a car manufacturing plant in Northern Ireland. He started production in 1981 and made about 1500 cars until he went out of business in 1983. His cars were unusual because all of the exterior sheet metal was stainless steel with a brush finish. This was great because it was to eliminate the rust of cars from the winter road salt, etc. The other different appearance of the cars was that he didn’t paint any of them. There wasn’t a paint booth in his assembly plant. The only Delorean I ever saw before I bought this car was in the Show Room of a local Ford Dealer in 1981. I never had any interest in the car and never cared about the car. In 2003 I decided I was going to look for one for my collection because they were limited production cars and would be of some interest in the future. Also it would be neat to have a car in my collection that was like the car in the movie “Back to the Future”. I found this car in the Show Room of a Car Collector in the Clearwater, Florida area. This car is unusual. For one it was the first car sold by John Delorean’s brother Mark who had a Delorean Dealership along with his Cadillac Dealership. Mark told John he wanted the car painted and John said we don’t paint cars. So Mark had it painted this beautiful red color before he put it in his Show Room. He did sell it and I’m the third owner. The car had only 6500 miles on it when I bought it. The car is hard to get in and out of. It is very close quarters on the inside when the Gull Wing Style doors are shut. The windows don’t go up and/or down except the little pass thru window on each door. |
